Here we look at scene that may look quite familiar if you’ve taken some winter drives around the North East. To no surprise, that is where this takes place. It is gorgeous, with snow atop the quaint stone colonial home, the slushy drive, and what looks to be some remnants of an old wood fence in the foreground. You have to assume it is nice and cozy inside by the fireplace with all that smoke coming out of the chimney.

Commander in Chief did not get its name from the picturesque scene. Although the scene looks beautiful to you and I, the reality was much different. This is the winter of 1777, towards the end of the Revolutionary War, and the continual snowfall, freezing, thawing, and refreezing has made it near impossible to transport food, stay dry, or fight diseases.

Soldiers on both sides are suffering, but inside this home a man that you and I owe our freedom to is hard at work. George Washington and at this moment is planning is orchestrating his offensive plans for the Battle at Valley Forge. This battle was one of will not weapons, and Washington’s leadership and pure American will power claimed victory. This battle did not end the war, but many believe it was the turning point that led to our freedom.

This is one of three ornaments being released in 2011 as part of our Artist Series Ornaments.
